English Wine Week Tasting


Thank you to everyone who came out for our English Wine Week Tasting. The turn out was great and we hope that you enjoyed the wines open to taste and found out a bit more about English Wine.

Join us and 7 English producers on the shops' forecourt for a celebration of English Wine!

For the one-off tasting for English Wine Week, we will be joined by seven English producers and you will have the opportunity to sample some of their fantastic ranges and meet the people behind them. Each producer will have a selection of wines open for you to taste. And did we mention this is all - for FREE.

This event will be held in the forecourt of the shop from 2.00pm until 5.00pm on Friday 24th June.

Unlike our other tastings, this event is non-ticketed and will be free to attend.

The producers joining us on the day will be:


Co-founders Richard and Leslie Balfour-Lynn planted their first vineyards in 2002 on the beautiful Hush Heath Estate, and five years later, Balfour Brut Rosé 2004 became the first English wine to win a gold medal and the Trophy at the International Wine Challenge.

When 10,000 bottles of Balfour Brut Rosé, made from the first harvest in 2004, won a gold medal at the International Wine Challenge in 2007, Balfour Winery was officially on the wine map.

Over the following years, co-founders Richard and Leslie formed a team of viticultural and winemaking experts who assisted them in creating a state-of-the-art winery and tasting room on Hush Heath Estate, which opened in 2010. In 2018 both the winery and tasting room was greatly expanded and is now one of the best visitor and winemaking facilities in England.

Simpson Wine Estate

Nyetimber is based in West Chiltington in the heart of West Sussex, on what is regarded as a perfect site for the production of sparkling wine. The estate was established in 1988, with just over 14 hectares planted with Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Meunier. Ever increasing demand for Nyetimber’s sparkling wines led to considerable vineyard expansion from 2006 onwards. Nyetimber now has several carefully selected vineyards across Sussex, Hampshire and Kent, with a total of 160 hectares under vine.

The estate is owned by Dutchman Eric Hereema who, alongside winemaker Cherie Spriggs, has installed an impressive cellar. All their grapes are estate-grown and pressed parcel by parcel by a Magnum press imported from Épernay in Champagne. Nyetimber’s vineyard holdings are planted mostly over limestone, which is favoured for its good drainage and low vigour. The vines are rigorously managed to ensure excellent flavour concentration and de-leafing is carried out to maximise the exposure of the grapes to sunlight. Cherie Spriggs won the IWC ‘sparkling Winemaker of the Year’ in 2018. She is the first winemaker outside of Champagne and the first woman to achieve this impressive accolade.

Exton Park

Exton Park, situated in the rolling downs above Hampshire's beautiful Meon Valley is among the top estates in the burgeoning English Sparkling Wine industry. Established in the mid 2000s it is the creation of Malcolm Isaac MBE, a highly successful entrepreneur and founder of Vitacress Salads, who has put substantial investment into building up a 60 acre vineyard together with a state of the art winery and tasting facilities. Current Vineyard Director, Fred Langdale, who is a specialist in cool climate viticulture and in particular sparking wines, has been involved from the outset and now that the vineyards are reaching maturity is able to take the credit for the reliable quality of their output. Head Winemaker is Corinne Seely who, after extensive experience first in Bordeaux and then around the world is committed to getting the best out the their chalky South Downs terroir.

Their wines are based around their 'RB' range which stands for 'Reserve Blend' and draws on their multi-year library of reserve wines which they utilise to create high quality cuvées which have a consistency of style from one year to the next, very much in the way non-vintage blends are created by the top houses across the Channel. They're able to ensure quality each year because all their fruit comes only from their own 60 acre single vineyard. In all, the output from Exton Park is very much a marker for the direction of English Sparkling - high quality, premium wines at sensibly pitched price levels.


Andrew Weeber, a South African born Orthapedic Surgeon turned farmer, took over the Gusbourne Estate just outside Appledore in Kent in 2004 with the intent of establishing a vineyard from which to produce English Sparkling Wine. The first vines were planted soon after and the first wines followed in 2010. Their vineyards, south facing on the low slopes of the Kentish escarpment, are planted with Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier. Currently these extend to twenty hectares with further plantings planned over the next few years.

From the outset Andrew had a vision of establishing Gusbourne as one of the best English producers and to that end has put in subtantial investment and assembled a talented team led by Charlie Holland who joined as head winemaker in 2013 and has gone on to be CEO while still being in charge of wine making.

Gusbourne's reputation is such that their wines are found on the lists of many of the country's most prestigious restaurants which speaks volumes about their achievements in the last few years.

Bolney Estate

The estate, located in the village of the same name on the edge of the South Downs about 30 minutes north of Brighton is in the heart of England's wine producing district.

Established back in 1972 it predates the current upsurge in the English wine industry however under Sam Linter, daughter of founders Janet and Rodney, and who now heads up the winemaking operations the estate has kept its finger on the pulse of modern practices and standards. Without doubt Bolney ranks among the foremost of English wine estates in both quality and ambition and they've done much to raise the reputation of English wine as a whole.

In contrast to many they don't concentrate on sparkling wines alone and they also produce high quality still red whites and rosés to the same exacting standards many of which are repeat award winners.


Founded in 2019 by couple Elisha Rai and Tom Cannon, folc started life during England’s first taste of ‘lockdown life’; a time when we were all forced to pause and find joy in small pleasures; a walk in the park, a late summer picnic. More than ever, we realised the importance of cherished loved ones, of family and friends, and local support.

It’s with this ethos that folc was born; a wine that celebrates the joy of community. Having left behind fast-paced City jobs at the age of 30, Elisha and Tom sought to create a rosé that encompassed all they loved about rural English life. Simple, pure ingredients, brought to life by the natural rhythms of the seasons. Folc is for the hazy summer days spent with friends; the picnics that last beyond sundown, the al fresco dinners that last beyond dessert.
