National Tequila Day 2020

Medium

Today (Friday 24th July) is National Tequila Day in the US, but that doesn't mean that we can't celebrate it over here in the UK as well.

So to celebrate, we have done some digging to find some interesting tequila facts that you probably didn't know about.

1. In Mexico, Tequila is drunk neat, without lime and salt.
Whereas the majority of us take Tequila as a shot or in a cocktail, Mexican's tend to sip their drink.

2. The agave plant is not a cactus, the agave plant is actually in the lily family.

3. Tequila has an appellation of origin.
Like champagne, cognac, and some fine wines, Tequila can only be produced in five regions in Mexico - Guanajuato, Michoacan, Nayarit, Tamaulipas, and Jalisco.

4. All Tequila is mezcal, but not all Mezcal is Tequila.
Mezcal is a distilled beverage made in Mexico from Agave. Tequila is made from Blue Agave in the Appellation of Origin.

5. There shouldn't be a worm in it.
By law, worms are prohibited in Tequila bottles. Agave Snout Weevil or the caterpillar phase of the Hypopta Agavis Moth may be in Mezcal bottles. They used to be included to prove the proof and/or presence of agave.

6. There are three main categories of Tequila .
Blanco - Un-aged and bottle within two months of distillation.
Reposado - Aged between two-twelve months in barrels.
Anejo - aged between 1-3 years in small oak barrels.

How do you take your Tequila? On the rocks, in a margarita or as a shot?
