DESCRIPTION
A complex and full bodied red from the Macedonia region of north west Greece.
The lowdown:
Xinomavro is a dark indigenous Greek variety that makes wines that age really well. This example from a single parcel of old vines, Barba Yannis, is one that shows it at its best. Aromas of smoky black fruit mingle with strawberries, dark cherries and a delicate spiciness. On the palate it's full bodied with a rich depth of fruit, lovely savoury notes and a touch of oak. The velety tannins lead onto a long and aromatic finish.
When to drink:
This powerful wine is one to be taken seriously and while drinking well now will keep well right into the late 2020s.
PRODUCER
Alpha Estate

Alpha Estate is located in Amyntaio in the Amyndeo wine region of North West Greece. It is the brainchild of two visionaries, second generation vine grower Makis Mavridis and Bordeaux trained wine maker Angelos Iatrides. Angelos is one of the most talented winemakers working in Europe.
The estate in the cool highlands of Western Macedonia where the altitudes approach 600 metres comprises 120 hectares of privately owned single block vineyards and employs the most up to date vineyard techniques and winemaking technology to produce world class wines from French and indigenous Greek varietals. The year round north westerly winds, low rainfall and sandy, low fertility soil and proximity of two is ideal to allow Makis and Angelos to make top quality contemporary Greek wines.
