Amalaya Malbec 2024
A high-altitude Malbec from Salta's Calchaqui Valley - rich, polished and full of bright red-fruit character.
Medium-Full Body, Oaked
Vegan, Organic
The Lowdown
From some of the highest and most remote vineyards anywhere, this is Argentine Malbec whose altitude brings extra brightness and perfume, lifted further by a touch of Tannat and Petit Verdot. The altitude - around 1,800 metres - gives vibrant fruit and a natural freshness. A small share of the wine is aged in French oak, adding spice, cedar and gentle richness without dulling the fruit. Blackcurrant, plum and a hint of mint come through clearly, the texture smooth and the tannins rounded. It's an expressive, finely balanced wine that shows how the altitude here brings definition as well as depth.
The Occasion
Good with roasted or grilled red meats, slow-cooked stews or anything with a smoky edge.
The Producer
Founded in 2010 in the stunning high-altitude Calchaqui Valley of Argentina's Salta wine region, Bodega Amalaya is part of the famous Hess Family Wine Estates from Napa Valley. Sitting over 1,800m above sea level, the vineyards soak up intense sun by day and cool off with chilly nights. This combination gives their wines amazingly concentrated flavours, brisk acidity, and fine tannins. Their wines are a treat, capturing the unique character of their extraordinary terroir.
