Description
In a nutshell:
A complex, rich and smooth Gran Selezione Chianti Classico.
The lowdown:
The Gran Selezione demarcation represents the very best of the Chianti Classico region, whereas Riserva is primarily focused on ageing Gran Selezione is all about the best quality from estate grown grapes. Castello di Forterutoli is an old Tuscan estate sitting in the heart of Chianti Classico that has been run by the Mazzei family for many centuries and produces some of the best wines in the region. Their extraordinary Vicoregio 36 is made from 36 different Sangiovese clones grown in the Vicoregio vineyard and is an absolute showcase of the variety and region. Located on a plateau at 1000ft with good sun exposure during the day yet cold nights this is a top expression of a warmer climate Chianti Classico Gran Selezione.
Hand-picked on September 28th before being vinified and matured in large French oak barrels for 18 months, followed by 4 months in concrete, only a tiny 6500 bottles of this 2017 were made. Aromas of red and dark cherries, floral and dried spice notes lead onto a smooth, rounded and complex palate with great depth of flavour. The tannins are fine and precise, the acidity balanced, refreshing and providing real structure, and the flavours concentrated and layered, finished with a long length.
95/100 - Wine Advocate, 94/100 - Decanter
