Description
In a nutshell:
A delightfully fresh and fruity Champagne with a touch of richness from a small, family owned house.
The lowdown:
This is a superb brut Champagne that's got lovely fresh, floral aromas which combine with characteristic sweet brioche overtones, balanced by peach skin and baked biscuit flavours which lead to a pleasingly crisp and citrus finish. The area around Les Riceys is towards the south of the Champagne region where Pinot Noir thrives. So it's no surprise that it makes up over thirds of the blend, with Chardonnay accounting for the rest. Only the first, lightest pressings are used, as is usual for fine Champagne. Classic slow second fermentation in bottle followed by maturing on the lees for at least 18 months before being disgorged and released for sale. This has long been one of our 'go to' Brut Champagnes and for good reason - it never fails to perform.
The Producer:
The Gremillet estate was founded by Jean-Michel Gremillet in 1979 when he inherited a plot of vines from his mother, Lulu. Today, the house possesses over 40 hectares of vineyards and is situated in a small village 45 kilometres from Troyes - the historic capital of Champagne - and 180 kilometres south of Reims. The vines lie on steep, sun-drenched hillsides in Kimmeridgian clay-limestone soils. Pinot Noir is king here, and constitutes around 94% of Gremillets plantings, with the remainder dedicated to Chardonnay, ideal for creating a classic, baked biscuit, rich, fruit-flavoured Champagne.
When to drink:
Nicely chilled it's a great performer just on its own, but also pefect with light nibbles, salads and simple fish dishes.
Suitable for Vegetarians
