In a nutshell: An attractive and accessible sweet wine from this family estate in the heart of Sauternes.
The lowdown: Run by Michel and François Roudes since the 1980s this lovely family estate is based near Preignac in the heart of Sauternes with a small stream, the Ciron, running through the vineyards helping to provide perfect conditions for noble rot (Botrytis Cinera) to set in to their Sémillon grapes so the resulting elixir - Sauternes sweet wine - can be produced. 2014 produced some great wines that can be really approachable quite young with power and a real freshness. Briatte's has rich aromas of honey, quince, apricot, acacia flower and ripe citrus fruits of orange and grapefruit. The palate is smooth and rich with subtle, balanced acidity that cuts through to the finish.
When to drink: Classically paired with rich deserts or blue cheese though Chateau Briatte also recommend fresh fennel and orange salad or sea bream carpaccio with a hint of lemon.
