Description
In a nutshell:
Full and ripe this 2016 Labegorce is an excellent value quality Margaux.
The lowdown:
Labegorce was once one of the largest estates in the Medoc prior to the French Revolution when it was split up however father of current owner, Natalie Perrodo, reunited those original properties in the mid-2000s to form the new old Chateau Labegorce and the quality of the wines has never been better. The estate is situated in the north of the appellation, just north of the town of Margaux itself, on predominantly sandy-gravel soils with around 50% of the vineyards planted with Cabernet Sauvignon and 45% with Merlot (the other 5% Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot) and including some very old vines of more than 100 years old.
2016 was a very good year and the 2016 Labegorce has been described as possibly the best wine from the estate yet and although Cab Sav makes up half of the vineyard plantings this vintage is 52% Merlot and just 38% Cabernet Sauvignon. Ripe, dark fruit aromas with notes of violets, cedar and spice lead onto a rich and warming medium-full bodied palate with mocha notes, ripe and robust tannins, good, fresh acidity and a long length. A really great value Margaux.
When to drink:
Decant for 1-2 hours beforehand if drinking now. Will keep into the 2030s. Try with classic, rich beef or duck based dishes.
