An elegant and intense Syrah from the exclusive northern Rhône appellation of Cornas.
In the 1990s Jean-Luc Colombo built his reputation in this small, exclusive appellation for making excellent wines made in a modern style and this cuvée is one of his private collection of four top wines made here. Grapes from low yielding 20-60 year old vines grown on steep slopes on the banks of the Rhône go into this and spend 18 months in oak after fermentation. It has notes of ripe blackcurrants and raspberries complemented by more spicy hints of liquorice and coffee. Very rich in the mouth, with powerful yet elegant tannins where the warming spiciness lingers long into the finish.
A quite luxurious cuvée from a producer who speciality is this appellation. It actually goes well with many meaty dishes as well as pizzas and pasta, but with Boeuf Bougignon it shines at its best.

Vins Jean-Luc Colombo
Jean-Luc Colombo is a relatively young company by French wine standards. With family origins in Marseille, Jean-Luc moved in 1982, with his wife Anne, to Cornas in the heart of the Rhône Valley, to set up a pharmacy and oenology lab. Four years later he bought his first vineyard - Les Ruchets - and celebrated his first vintage in 1987. His business went from strength-to strength and in 1993 Anne and Jean-Luc sold their pharmacy to focus on the wine business, investing in more vineyards and a house on the Cornas hillsides, as well as working as a negociant in this famous region.
As well as owning vineyards in the Cornas area they've also added holdings close to their origins on the Mediterranean coast near Marseille. Their winery, offices, bottling line and oenology laboratory are situated in the centre of Cornas. They are renowned for their great wines from the northern and southern Rhône and the Mediterranean region, and now export to over fifty countries.
