In a nutshell:
Quite a deep coloured and powerful single vintage medium dry Madeira
Colheita is the term used to denote wines made from a single vintage year. When it comes to Madeira the wines can age virtually indefinitely so it's possible to see some very old wines around. Part way through fermentation the wine is fortified with neutral grape spirit before beginning the unique Estufa process where the wine is heated over an extended period to build complexity and consistency before being transferred to casks to continue ageing. This wine is quite a deep colour for Verdelho and it has a powerful citrus character with the tang of old fashioned marmalade. Rich and pungent with lovely fresh acidity it rounds off with a slightly rustic finish which is altogether quite attractive.
When to drink:
This is actually a good choice for drinking, slightly chilled, by itself. With food it matches well creamy soups and starters.
