In a nutshell: A properly serious Pinto Grigio from Friuli Isonzo in the far north eastern corner of Italy, near Austria
The lowdown: Dessimis is 100% Pinot Grigio and winemaker Gianfranco Gallo likes to pick his grapes as late as possible from low yielding vineyards where the microclimate leads to a significant diurnal change. This gives the wines a great intensity of flavour and richness. A truly elegant wine with flavours of tarte Tatin, almond, and ripe apricot yet with an underlying cleanness to it all.
When to drink: Forget what you know about other Pinot Grigios this is simply a quite captivating wine.
This family owned estate, overseen since 1978 by Gianfranco Gallo, is in Friuli in the far northeast of Italy near the Slovenian border.
Production is mainly based in single vineyard wines from their 50 hectares of vines on the stony and glacial soils near the banks of the Isonzo river close to Mariano del Friuli. Premium white wines are their focus, chardonnay, sauvignon blanc, pinot grigio and malvasia istriana in particular, and whilst vintages are released two years after harvest they all have at least eight to ten years of ageing potential.
