Papagiannakos 'Erythros' Agiorgitiko/Cabernet 2022
A generous Greek red with ripe dark fruit backed by a firmer, spicier edge, soft tannins and a touch of vanilla.
Medium-Bodied, Oaked
Vegan
The Lowdown
Agiorgitiko is Greece's signature red grape, cropping up in many guises. Here, where it's blended with 30% Cabernet Sauvignon and aged for 6 months in barrel, the outcome is a soft and plush wine with a twist of liquorice spice adding depth. The 12.5% alcohol is more easy-going than you often see, but for all that it lacks for nothing in body with its velvety and savoury finish.
The Occasion
Beefy, rich, and built for the simple pleasures of the table - pull the cork on this one when you need a wine that can stand up to hearty flavours.
The Producer
Papagiannakos is one of the leading wineries of Mesogia, the picturesque region east of Athens often considered its 'stockbroker belt' and the historic heart of Attica's wine production. Founded in 1919, it's now run by Vassilis Papagiannakos, continuing four generations of family winemaking. From around 30 hectares of vines, the estate grows native varieties including Savatiano — the region's heritage grape — alongside Malagouzia, Assyrtiko and Agiorgitiko, plus the more recently planted Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Their ambition and identity with the region show clearly in the authenticity of their wines.
