The lowdown:
The Hawke's Bay wine region in North Island is highly regarded for its production of Bordeaux-style red blends and also for producing some exceptional Syrahs, arguably some of the best French-style Syrahs in the New World. The grapes for Esk Valley's Artisanal Collection Syrah come from two contrasting vineyard sites: Gimblett Road in the internationally recognised Gimblett Gravels sub-region, providing the wine with dark fruit notes and tannic structure, while Heipipi Vineyard brings wonderful perfumed notes and added complexity. In the glass lots of ripe red fruit notes of raspberries and red cherry with undertones of wood spice and black pepper leading onto a medium-full bodied palate with fantastic concentration of flavour. Expressive red berries and sour cherry flavours with great refreshing acidity providing a backbone, elegance and a long length.
When to drink:
Try with grilled vegetables and meats, lamb in particular, and works really well with wild game dishes.
