Fabiano Valpolicella Ripasso Classico Superiore 2023
A robust, layered Valpolicella Ripasso with ripe cherry, dark berry, and a hint of dried fruit, all kept in check by soft tannins and a subtle spice.
The Lowdown
Valpolicella Ripasso is a different animal to your typical bright and breezy Valpolicella - it's a bit more serious altogether, with an extra layer of richness thanks to a second fermentation on Amarone skins. It's a style that’s become increasingly popular, and it's easy to see why. Here you'll find elegant, ripe cherry aromas, and a touch of silky vanilla spice from its twelve months in oak. It's the kind of red that’s rich and full-flavoured, yet nicely restrained, so it won't overwhelm. There's plenty of depth without hitting you over the head with it.
The Occasion
A treat with something hearty like osso buco or a beef ragù, as its rich fruit and subtle spice bring out the depth and succulence of slow-cooked meats.
The Producer
Vini Fabiano's story starts in Venice just before the First World War when Francesco Fabiano first set up shop. He must have been onto something, as he found success selling wines around town and slowly expanded across Veneto and northwest Italy. By the late ‘60s, they'd made quite a move, establishing a sizeable estate in Sona, nestled between Verona and Lake Garda. Today, it's Alessandro Fabiano at the helm, following in his father Nicola's footsteps. Their range now includes Veronese specialities, prosecco, and regional varietals, but their prized Amarones and Valpolicellas remain the real jewels in the family crown.
