Description
In a nutshell:
A soft and rich Barbera with great concentration from one of Italy's best winemakers.
The lowdown:
Barbera is a native grape to the Langhe region of Piedmont that can produce great value fresh and fruity pasta/pizza reds as well some wines of astonishing elegance and purity of fruit. This wine falls into the latter camp. Made by Gian Luca Colombo (Italian Young Winemaker of the Year 2014) at his tiny (literally his garage) winery Segni di Langa in the village of Roddi, Barolo this Barbera comes from two small plots of very old vines: Magliano Alfieri vineyard at 88 years old and Roddi at between 45-80 years old. The yields from these old vines is ridiculously small resulting in grapes with great concentration and depth of flavour. Working organically and with a restrained, hands-off approach Gian Luca matures his Barbera in large, used Austrian oak barrels for about a year before bottling without fining or filtration.
In the glass the aromas are intense and draw you in, there is so much freshness and depth with bright, ripe red berry and cherry fruit notes. On the palate medium-bodied, super smooth, again really fresh and joyful with great purity and intensity to those berry fruits, all finished with a long length.
When to drink:
Enjoy now, though Gian Luca says this wine has the capacity to age a decade or two. A food friendly wine try with mushroom based dishes, classic gnocchi is a tomato based sauce, or braised meat dishes.
