DESCRIPTION
A smooth, rich and creamy 'off-dry' edition of Louis Roederer's Non-Vintage Champagne.
The lowdown:
Demi-Sec Champagnes have a higher level of residual sugar than the more commonly seen 'brut' styles. Louis Roederer's is around 40 grams per litre compared to around 10 g/l for their Brut NV and this gives it a more honeyed character while still retaining plenty of freshness and zip. It's a wine with quite a striking depth, almond and toasty aromas, and caramelised apple and ripe pear flavours. The generosity and complexity shine through well are not masked by the dosage.
When to drink:
Soft and elegant it works well as an aperitif and goes well with fruit and cream based desserts.
Suitable for Vegetarians
PRODUCER
Champagne Louis Roederer

Undoubtedly one of the great Champagne houses, Louis Roederer was established in 1776 and remains under family ownership with current CEO Frédéric Rouzaud representing the 7th generation of the Roederer family. With over 240 hectares of their own vineyards which are located exclusively in Grands and Premiers Crus villages around 70% of their non-vintage and all of their vintage Champagnes come from their own sites - quite a higher proportion than commonly seen. The Chef de Cave is Jean-Baptiste Lécaillon who was appointed to the position back in 1999.
Since around the turn of the century they've been actively practising organic and biodynamic viticulture across 82 hectares of their sites and currently have one of the largest landholding of such vineyards in the region. Gaining certification for this is not the goal, the objective is simply to enhance the aim of continuously striving to improve the overall quality.
Their most famous cuvée 'Cristal' is possibly the ultimate luxury Champagne of all. lt was first created for Tsar Alexander II of Russia in 1876 with an iconic bottle design with a flat base and made from clear crystal. The distinctive wrapper is there to protect the wine from ultraviolet light. Only produced in selected years, the blend is usually 55% Pinot Noir and 45% Chardonnay from only the best rated sites of Champagne Louis Roederers vineyards.
