In a nutshell: A complex and evolved Premier Cru Nuits-Saint-Georges from one of the best producers in Burgundy's Côte de Nuits.
The lowdown: Domaine Henri Gouges are stalwarts of Nuits-Saint-Georges and have been for 100 years since the original founded the domaine and spearheaded the laws on AOCs to protect the great wines of Burgundy. Now run by Grégory and Antoine Gouges the estate has been run working to organic viticultural principles for the last 15 years to the benefit of the vineyards moving forward. This wine comes from the Premier Cru vineyard of Les Pruliers, a prime site located in the heart of the appellation on the middle of easterly facing slopes 240-260m above sea level.
Intense and robust with excellent structure and precision. Aromas of red and black fruits, spice and evolved notes of leather and tobacco lead onto a medium-bodied palate with great complexity and depth with those primary fruits joined by minerally and stony notes, firm tannins and a long length.
When to drink: Just entering into its drinking window though will easily keep for the rest of the decade.
Undoubtedly one of the most famous domaines in the northern Côte d'Or market town of Nuits-Saint-Georges the Gouges family have owned vineyards here for generations..
Gregory and Antoine Gouges, great grandsons of Henri, currently run the estate. In total they have just under fifteen hectares of vines in the appellation including parcels in 6 premier cru vineyards. These days the amount of new oak used is restricted to about 25% for each vintage. The combination of their small production and high demand for their wines means they're becoming increasingly harder to find.
