In a nutshell:
A superb, elegant, old vineyard Sonoma County Zinfandel from the great Ridge winery.
Ridge are all about showcasing individual vineyards and operate in a sustainable, organic, hands off approach so each wine each year is a true reflection of the site and season. The very old nineteenth century Lytton Springs vineyard in Dry Creek Valley, Sonoma County is home to over 100 year old Zinfandel vines interplanted with Petite Sirah, Carignan among others.
This 2018 is 72% Zinfandel, 18% Petite Sirah, 8% Carignan and 2% Mouvedre that has spent 14 months maturing in a mix of 1 year to 5 year old American oak barrels. A beautiful, refined and elegant wine that is only going to open up and improve over the coming years. Pronounced aromas of blackberry, red cherry, cedar, pepper and liquorice lead onto a vibrant, layered and rich palate. Wonderfully balanced and finished with a really long length.
96/100 - Antonio Galloni
When to drink:
Can be enjoyed now but will keep for the rest of this decade. Try with Texan-style beef brisket, braised short ribs, or quite simply a big, juicy burger.
