In a nutshell:
A refined, elegant and iconic Australian Semillon from the Hunter Valley in New South Wales
Tyrrell's Vat 1 Hunter Valley Semillon is something of an Australian institution and one of the most recognized and awarded of the country's white wines. The Hunter Valley itself is one of the oldest vineyard areas in Australia and this wine which was first made in 1963 uses vines planted as long ago as 1923 grown in their Short Flat vineyard which, with light sandy soil, is ideal for growing Semillon. After hand picking the fruit was cool fermented and spent a short time on its lees before being bottled. No oak was used either during fermentation, or maturation. Typically dry and quite light bodied it has a core of juicy citrus and lime fruit and an acid profile which gives it wonderful length and excellent balance.
When to drink:
This is a wine designed to age gracefully and while it's perfectly rewarding now, leaving it to age until the late 2020s, or beyond, will certainly pay dividends.
