Description
In a nutshell:
White flowers, juicy stone fruit, and a zing of citrus - that's this Friulian white, all wrapped up in a refreshingly mineral finish.
The lowdown:
This intriguing white is from Italy's Friuli region and shows off the areas happy knack for creating interesting, complex wines. Picture those stony Isonzo vineyards with a touch of sea breeze on the vines. It's a blend of Malvasia Istriana, Tocai Friulano, and a splash of Riesling. No oaks used, instead, the 2020 vintage rested on its lees for seven months. You'll get a whiff of flowers and lime from the Riesling, then the other grapes add a perfumed, almost waxy richness that builds in your mouth. And oh, that finish - it lingers beautifully.
The Producer:
Vie di Romans, based deep in the Friuli-Venezia Giulia's Isonzo region, is an estate where nature and craftsmanship combine beautifully. Winemaker Gianfranco Gallo meticulously tends the estates 65 hectares of vineyards, yielding a modest 250,000 bottles annually. The soil, remarkably well-drained and mineral-rich, acts as a natural reservoir for rainfall. Gentle winds balance the summer heat, extending the ripening season for intensely flavoured grapes. Gallo's low yields and his fondness for fully ripe fruit are the final pieces in the puzzle. His Vie di Romans wines have a richness and depth rarely found, released a touch later than others in the region for that extra layer of complexity.
When to drink:
This fragrant beauty offers pleasing freshness now but could develop further complexity over the coming years - enjoy with grilled seafood or creamy pasta dishes.
Suitable for Vegans
