In a nutshell:
A polished and sophisticated Cabernet Sauvignon led South African Bordeaux Blend.
Bordeaux inspired red blends are something of a speciality in South Africa's Cape wine lands and at Vilafonté their focus is entirely on this style of wine. Their 'Seriously Old Dirt' wines are, kind of, their second label, being made from barrels that didn't make it into their top cuvée Series 'C' and Series 'M'. Nevertheless, given the all round high quality here, the 'Seriously Old Dirt' wines are seriously good value. The 2018 vintage is the 7th release and is composed almost entirely of Cabernet Sauvignon (89%), with small amounts of Malbec, Merlot and Cabernet Franc and was matured for 21 months in used French oak barriques. With spicily aromatic aromas where dark berry fruits, rich damson and sweet tobacco notes stand out the flavours on the palate are juicy and fruit packed with an accompanying flinty minerality and waves of dark chocolate. The tannins are ripe and integrated which give a superb structure as it moves to the luxurious lengthy finish.
When to drink:
Sumptuous yet mellow this is perfectly ready to drink now, but a few years in the cellar will see it get even better.
