Description
In a nutshell:
A vibrant, biodynamic and slightly cloudy light red from the slopes of Mount Etna in Sicily.
The lowdown:
Predominately made from the local variety Nerello Mascalese hand picked from organically grown old bush vines located high up on terraced slopes on the north face of Mount Etna, along with small amounts of Nerello Cappuccio, Grenache and others planted alongside. 50% of this wine is made in their 250 year old Palmento which is a traditional Etnean wine cellar the traditional way with only a short 5 day skin maceration. 30% of the wine is made in a Georgian qvevri, large clay pots buried up to their neck underground, with the remaining 20% of the blend is fermented and aged in old, large oak barrels. Bottling for this 2018 vintage took place in September 2020 without fining or filtration. Nerello Mascalese makes firm and quite pale coloured wines with enticing bright red berry aromas, sometimes akin to Pinot Noir or Nebbiolo. With attractive cherry, wild strawberry aromas and fresh red fruits there's hint of sourness, earthy, mild tannins, and a great minerality making this a really invigorating wine.
When to drink:
With its zippy acidity and fresh flavours this is a perfect red to drink slightly chilled.
