In a nutshell: An elegant, fresh Margaret River Chardonnay from one of the pioneers of viticulture in Western Australia.
The lowdown: Xanadu Estate is one of the oldest and most respected wineries in Western Australia with their first vineyards planted in 1977. This wine (previously known as the 'Estate' Chardonnay) was barrel fermented and then matured in French oak, but only 25% new to preserve freshness and the fruit flavours. This is an elegant, vibrant style of Chardonnay with ripe citrus, pink grapefruit and green apple fruit flavours and minerally acidity backed up by subtle oak spice and a roundness to the palate. A long, clean, crisp finish.
When to drink: Complex and harmonious, try it with light fish dishes, salads or goat's cheese.
Founded in 1977 by Irishman Dr John Lagan, Xanadu is a true pioneer of the West Australian wine region of Margaret River. With a rich history of producing wines of uncompromising quality, Xanadu wines are renowned for their distinct character that embody all that is Margaret River.
Lovers of literature will remember Xanadu as Samuel Coleridges mysterious, idyllic, exotic city; home of Kubla Khan. Dr Lagan, himself a great literature enthusiast, drew parallels between Coleridges visions of utopia and his newly adopted home, and thus the name Xanadu was born.
True to its poetic namesake, Xanadu is located in an idyllic setting in the heart of Margaret River. Surrounded by magnificent coastline, warm growing seasons with cooling sea breezes create the perfect maritime climate that Margaret River is best known for. This Mediterranean climate and gravel sandy loam soils deliver ideal conditions enabling Chardonnay and Cabernet to flourish. These varieties alongside Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon, are the primary focus at Xanadu.
Under the helm of senior winemaker Glenn Goodall, winemaker Brendan Carr and viticulturalist Suzie Muntz create expressive regional wines of quality. This quest has seen Xanadu become one of Margaret Rivers most successful show winners of the past decade. With an impressive array of major wine show trophies, Xanadus reputation continues to grow.
