Description
In a nutshell:
Wonderfully rich and mature right-bank Bordeaux that is drinking superbly well.
The lowdown:
As the name might suggest Lalande-de-Pomerol sits adjacent to its famous sibling and produces some wines that easily match those of its exalted neighbour, though not in price, of which this wine is certainly one. Bought by Hubert de Bouard de Laforest of Saint-Emilion's Chateau Angelus, and now run by his daughter Coralie, in the late '90s the estate has seen big investment and now has an entirely new state-of-the-art cellar and produces excellent wines. This 2012 is 85% Merlot, with the remainder Cabernets Franc and Sauvignon, and has been matured in barrel for up to two years before bottling.
Wonderfully big, dark, embracing aromas of black cherry, cassis, blueberry and violets lead onto a medium-full bodied, soft palate with ripe fruity, spicy and savoury notes, fine tannins and a long length.
When to drink:
Drink now though will keep for another 5 or so years. Grilled red meat dishes are an obvious though very good pairing, roasts, or even Italian tomato based dishes.
