In a nutshell: A bright, fruity, yet velvety organic red blend from the Dordogne in South West France.
The lowdown: At Château des Gendres they make some excellent organic wines in styles not too far removed from their neighbours in Bordeaux that are generally a bit easier on the pocket, their Bergerac Rouge 'Cuvée des Conti' being a case in point. It's made from Merlot, Malbec and Cabernet Franc which are farmed strictly according to Organic and Biodynamic principles. Fermentation and lees ageing takes place in stainless steel - there is no oak ageing - to retain a bright primary fruit character. It has a lovely nose of cassis, mint and peppery spice and is soft and rounded on the palate with attractive plum and dark fruit flavours and a dry, savoury finish. Very moreish indeed.
When to drink: Brilliantly versatile and easy drinking it's also good with roast lamb, or rich feathered game dishes.
Vincenzo de Conti along with his wife and children settled down in South-West France in 1925. 1956, his son Primo de Conti took over the family agricultural business with his wife Michelle, who looked after a couple of horses, and with his brother Albert. Luc, the 3rd generation, settled down at the farm in the early 80s, following his passion for horses. He inherited several old vines, and planted more plots later on, while his wife Martine started managing the receptive side of the business.
His cousin Francis, with whom he grew up with in this large family, joined Luc, Matine & the business in 1990. He brought with him 20 hectares of vines planted in the Saint Julien d'Eymet and Grand Caillou areas, and took charge of the vines.
