The lowdown: Cloudy Bay is the brand that made New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc famous the world over. Well, this is their equally impressive sparkling wine which is made from Marlborough grown Chardonnay and Pinot Noir and vinified using the methode traditionelle. As you would expect it's a top notch sparkling and a match for many a Champagne costing a good deal more. Full of crisp apple flavours, underpinned by nutty yeast complexity derived from two years bottle maturation on lees it subtly combines fresh and fruity Chardonnay notes with rich and savoury hints of Pinot Noir.
When to drink: A fresh, aperitif style of sparkler. It's also superb sipped alongside things like seared scallops and other fresh sea food.
Cloudy Bay was one of the first five wine makers to venture into Malbrough, established in 1985. At the time, it was almost an unimaginable place to set-up a vineyard. But Cloudy Bay's founder - David Hohnen - was convinced of its potential to produce great wine and invested iin the best land of the region. Since then, Malborough has become New Zealand's leading wine region, as well as one of the finest winemaking locations in the world.
The winery was named after Cloudy Bay, a body of water explorer Captain James Cook came across during his voyage to New Zealand in 1770.
