Description
Madeira
ABV 19.0% - 75.0cl
In a Nutshell:
A structured Sercial with dried fruit and quince alongside citrus and nuts - richer in body than most, yet crisp and dry.
The Lowdown:
Sercial makes the driest of Madeiras - ideal aperitifs. D'Oliveiras' approach though - extended cask ageing and a belief in powerful, structured winemaking - brings out a bit more intensity and depth. Dried fruit and quince sit alongside citrus peel and hazelnut, with that characteristic Sercial acidity keeping everything focused and bright. If anything there's more texture and presence than you often get at this age, yet the clean, crisp character is always there. Classic Sercial with a little more body and depth.
The Producer:
Founded in 1850 and still family-run, Pereira d'Oliveira is one of the great keepers of Madeira tradition. Step into their cellars in Funchal and it feels like time has barely moved on - dark old casks, heavy bottles and labels that look straight out of another century. They are one of the few houses to survive from the pre-phylloxera period and have maintained a stock of old and rare wines dating well back into the 1800s. While others have modernised, they've simply carried on doing what they've always done: maturing wines slowly in wood, bottling only when ready, and guarding one of the island's most extraordinary libraries of vintages. Less commercial than their peers, they remain custodians of Madeira's heritage and a touchstone for authenticity and age-worthy style.
When to Drink:
Versatile, but especially good with lighter starters - smoked fish, cured meats or seafood suit its acidity and fruit.
