Description
Madeira
ABV 19.0% - 75.0cl
In a Nutshell:
A beautifully mature Verdelho with dried citrus, nuts and bright acidity, showing D'Oliveiras' trademark depth and balance.
The Lowdown:
Verdelho tends to have a gentle richness while keeping a clean, bright acidity - exactly what we have here. And having spent more than 20 years maturing in cask, this shows off the style with real appeal. Ageing has added depth and texture, bringing dried citrus, quince and a nutty edge, and a natural freshness keeps everything lifted, giving clarity to the fruit and a long, tangy finish. Mature, well defined and shaped by years in wood, it has a graceful balance of sweetness, acidity and age.
The Producer:
Founded in 1850 and still family-run, Pereira d'Oliveira is one of the great keepers of Madeira tradition. Step into their cellars in Funchal and it feels like time has barely moved on - dark old casks, heavy bottles and labels that look straight out of another century. They are one of the few houses to survive from the pre-phylloxera period and have maintained a stock of old and rare wines dating well back into the 1800s. While others have modernised, they've simply carried on doing what they've always done: maturing wines slowly in wood, bottling only when ready, and guarding one of the island's most extraordinary libraries of vintages. Less commercial than their peers, they remain custodians of Madeira's heritage and a touchstone for authenticity and age-worthy style.
When to Drink:
Best served very slightly chilled to bring out the lift and brightness, it works well with fruit desserts and cheeses, though it's just as rewarding on its own. Madeira keeps brilliantly once opened it will stay in good shape for a long time.
