Description
In a nutshell:
Superb rich and complex Sauvignon from the cool southern tip of Africa.
The lowdown:
Ghost Corner (Spookdraai in Afrikaans) lies in the Elim ward just inland of Cape Agulhas, Africa's most southerly point where the Atlantic and Indian Oceans meet and a graveyard for ships. A really cool climate with winds coming in off the ocean(s) and with deep lime rich soils this is a difficult location to grow grapes, but ultimately very rewarding, especially for varieties like Sauvignon. Highly accomplished winemaker David Nieuwoudt (of Cederberg Wines) makes a small collection of wines from this area, including this complex and layered Wild Ferment Sauvignon. Hand-picked grapes in the cool of the early morning, partially whole bunch pressed before undergoing a long, natural fermentation in 400l French oak barrels. The wine is then further matured for another 10 months in barrels on its lees.
Pronounced aromas of citrus, white pear, tropical notes of pineapple and passionfruit, a green grassy stalkiness, and a rich almost sweetness like quince. The palate is rounded and fresh and bursting with flavour. Rich, ripe stone and tropical fruit notes, citrus and crisp, minerally acidity with quite light oaky touches and a lovely roundness to the palate with a long finish.
94/100 - Decanter World Wine Awards, 94/100 - Tim Atkin MW
When to drink:
Try with mushrooms with a creamy sauce, dishes with a fennel influence, richer or smoked seafood.
