Description
In a nutshell:
A richly deep red wine with strong fruit flavours made from the classic Bordeaux blend varietals, from the Yamanashi province in Japan.
The lowdown:
Grace Wine was established in 1923, in the Katsunuma province, the birthplace of the Japanese wine industry. Committed to the belief that great wine is made in the vineyard, they were the first to research and introduce European training and pruning methods in the 1990. Made from Japan's most important indigenous grapes: Koshu. The grapes for this wine are grown on the foothills of Mt. Kayagatake from estate managed vineyards at an altitude above 700 metres. This wine was given the name 'Akeno' so that it could reflect the cherishment of its origins. It is a blend of three varieties from a single vineyard, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Cabernet Franc. After rigorous selection in the vineyard and the winery, small lots were selected and vinified separately with scrupulous attention to detail as well as gentle extraction. Each varietal was matured in French oak barrels for more that 17 months, and then bottled without clarification or filtration. The 2017 vintage is renowned for being the best available currently, due to the fantastic weather conditions the resulting wine is top rated by critics. By lowering the ratio of new barrels, the wine produced is full of varietal characteristics and a sense of place. Expect a wine that is dark ruby in colour, with a medium body, good acidity, and subtle tannins. The primary fruits on display are black and red fruits of blackcurrants, blackberries, raspberries, and cranberries. Due to the oak aging the complexity of the wine develops on the palate to reveal smokey, leather, and pepper notes. The finish is long and pleasant. The 2017 vintage has been rested for a few years already so it can be enjoyed now or to develop the savoury flavours more, the wine can be aged further for 2/3 more years.
When to drink:
A wine that can be paired with food or just enjoyed solo. Pair it with beef, veal, mushroom, or rich vegetarian dishes to highlight the best bits of this wine.
