Description
In a nutshell:
A rich and flavoursome, traditional English Bacchus, with citrus and stone fruit and herbaceous flavours, from New Hall Wine Estate in Essex.
The lowdown:
The history of vineyards in Essex go back to the Middle Ages, although New Hall Wine Estate was established in 1969, which makes it one of the oldest commercial vineyards in the UK. The estate has an impressive 49 hectares under vine and one of the largest plantings of Bacchus in the UK. The vines are planted on sheltered southern facing slopes in the Crouch Valley, and mainly London clay soils, with chalk concealed below the clay deposits. The fruit is harvested by hand when it has reached maturity. Each of the 8 Bacchus plantings were vinified separately to retain each blocks integrity and characteristics. The grapes underwent a cool, steady fermentation in stainless steel tanks, with carefully selected yeast strains. 1.5% of the blend was barrel-fermented in third fill French oak, followed by two months ageing in barrel, which added texture to the mouthfeel. This wine displays complex and aromatic notes of grapefruit, pear, peach, lime layered with herbaceous overtones of nettle and cut grass.
When to drink:
This wine is a great substitute for New Zealand Sauvignon Blancs, would pair well with fish and vegetable dishes in the summer months.
