Description
In a nutshell:
Rich and elegant Super Tuscan from the renowned Tenuta San Guido winery.
The lowdown:
The second wine of Tenuta San Guido and the brother to the legendary Sassicaia. Set in rolling hills near the Tuscan coast Tenuta San Guido has been a pioneer in bringing Bordeaux varieties to western Tuscany and cementing the Bolgheri area as one of Italy's best, so much so in fact that there is now a DOC dedicated solely for Sassicaia. While Sassicaia is mostly Cabernet Sauvignon with some Cab Franc Guidalberto contains 40% Merlot, with the rest Cabernet Sauvignon, so rather than being seen as a 'little brother' it really stands out as a wine of its own.
This is a find wine with bright aromas of red fruit and dark berries with some earthy and savoury hints. Full-bodied on the palate with great ripeness of fruit but along with grippy tannins and depth of flavour there is a real elegance here characteristic of the estate. The acidity is fresh and balanced and the length long.
17/20 - Tim Jackson MW (jancisrobinson.com), 95/100 - Wine Enthusiast
When to drink:
Drinking now though decant beforehand. Will easily keep for the rest of this decade.
