International Grenache Day 2022

Medium

On Friday the 17th of September we are celebrating International Grenache Day. This celebration is held every year on the third Friday of September. This day brings attention to this juicy fruit that allows us to enjoy the sweet yet spicy wines it produces.

Originally coming from the northern region in Spain known as Aragon, this grape variety has been around for many years. However, it is more commonly known in this region as Garnacha. Since then, it has spread in location to Sardinia, Southern France, California and even as far off as Australia. In fact, it is one of the most widely planted red grape varieties on the entire planet.

The diverse flavour profile of this grape variety can be wide. With raspberry and strawberry flavours, and a hint of white pepper spice notes, in wines young in age. To wines that have been allowed to age, showing developed flavours of leather and tar. And often overlooked, are the semi-sweet and sweet wines produced from this grape. The adaptability of this wine opens it up to be the perfect wine for multiple different seasons and occasions.

Despite the wine falling from popularity in the mid-20th Century, it has slowly been clawing back its status as one of the great grape varieties in the world. Because of its versatile flavour profile, it is often a popular wine for blending. So, it is most likely already mixed into your favourite wine, and you didn’t even know.

If you’re wondering how you can get involved to celebrate this amazing grape variety, it couldn’t be more simple. Pop into the shop or browse online to find a bottle of Grenache that catches your fancy. Invite a few friends over, pop open that bottle and enjoy. Maybe even add some snacks in there. Maybe you’ll start someone’s interest in Grenache.
