In a nutshell: A fresh and minerally 100% Chardonnay from north east Italy.
The lowdown: Chardonnay is not seen so much in Friuli in the north eastern part of Italy above Venice, but this example from Tenute Tomasella is good example of its capabilites in this region. It has a loverly floral quality on the nose while the flavours on the palate are of ripe melons and citrus fruit with just a hint of apple pie sweetness. For all that it has a refreshing minerality and good crisp acidity.
When to drink: A really good 'all occasions' white that won't disappoint. Also it makes a good pairing with white meats and fish.
The beautiful Tenute Tomasella winery sits near the village of Portobuffolè on the borders of the regions of Friuli and Veneto in north east Italy, between the DOC Friuli Grave and the DOC Piave. In many ways they benefit from the influence of both areas that have very different geographical and cultural characteristics and traditions.
Established in 1965 by the Tomasella family, their passion for producing great wine has been handed down from generation to generation, the current custodian being Paolo Tomasella. In total the estate covers 150 hectares in the Friuli and Veneto regions, 30 hectares of which (23 in Veneto and 7 in Friuli) are under vines.,This enables the winery to fully exploit the best characteristics of the two different terroirs.
